FOR OVER FIVE decades
Charley Harper has been illustrating our world. From his science paintings for
the Giant Golden Book of Biology, to the lyrical line drawings in Betty
Crocker's Dinner for Two CookBook, Mr. Harper's hand is undeniable.
Painting in a style he calls "minimal realism', he captures the
essence of his subject using the fewest elements possible. 'I don't count
the feathers, I just count the wings.'
For the first time, his life's work is being presented in
CHARLEY HARPER: AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE

Charley Harper answers the questions he is asked most often
about his work, challenges your previous perception of nature with 114 pictures
and paragraphs (on 132 pages, 11 1/4 x 11 1/4), and offers a new and unexpected
- and unprecedented - way to enjoy it, both visually and verbally. Unlike
traditional surrealistic wildlife art, his is flat, simple, and funny. Instead
of putting all the details in when he paints, he tries to leave them all out;
he reduces nature to the simplest possible visual terms without losing
identity, thereby enhancing identity. Minimal realism, he calls it, adding,
"When Audubon painted a bird, he had to count all the feathers in the wings. I
just count the wings."
